The steering mechanism (1) for motor vehicles has a steering bracket (2) for mounting the steering column on the vehicle frame (7). The steering bracket is attached only to the pedal mechanism (3) so as to be fixed w.r.t. the vehicle chassis. The pedal mechanism housing (4) is box-shaped and of stable material. It is open at the front in the vehicle's lognitudinal direction and is otherwise an essentially closed box. At least a lower steering bracket bolting point (10) is integrated into the pedal mechanism housing. USE/ADVANTAGE - Simple design and enables simple assembly.
