The invention relates to a process for removing heavy metals from effluents which can also contain complexing agents. In the process according to the invention, a water-soluble cyanide salt is added to the effluents, the resulting heavy metal/cyanide complex is bound on an anion exchanger, the anion exchanger loaded with heavy metal/cyanide complex is periodically regenerated and, if necessary, excess cyanide present in the treated effluent is destroyed. The advantage of the process according to the invention is that heavy metals can be separated off even in the presence of complexing agents from effluents in a simple manner and with avoidance of the addition of chemicals which can only be removed again in an involved manner.
