There is provided a recording apparatus in which a stepping motor (6) is used as a driving source to reciprocate a carriage (2) on which a recording head is mounted and the recording is executed by the recording head in accordance with the timing when the stepping motor (6) rotates, comprising: a rotational position detector (16) to detect a rotational position of the stepping motor (6); a current switching circuit (25) to switch energization currents to the stepping motor (6) on the basis of a detection signal from the rotational position detector (16); a motor speed control circuit (24) to closed loop control a rotational speed of the stepping motor (6) through the current switching circuit (25); and a controller (20) for detecting a load corresponding to the stepping motor (6) by a speed control output from the motor speed control circuit (24) and for controlling so as to change output torque characteristics of the stepping motor (6) in accordance with the load.
