PURPOSE:To realize a negative electrode of a long service life and a good absorption property by coating a conductive supporter with a paste made by mixing a specific active substance powder and a specific substance, and forming a microporous membrane of metal nickel over the surface by a specific method. CONSTITUTION:As an active substance, a substance mainly of cadmium oxide or cadmium hydroxide is used. For example, carbon black or a carbon fiber of the mean particle diameter 0.5mum is heated for about 10 minutes in oxygen, and after giving at least one sort of carboxyl radical, carbonyl radical, quinone, and the like to the surface as a surface functional radical, it is mixed with a cadmium oxide powder of the mean particle diameter about 1mum, at the wt. ratio 5:95, and the ethylene glycol solution of polyvinylalcohol is added and kneaded to make a paste. The paste is spread on a nickel-plated porous steel plate. The product is negative-electrolyzed in the mixture solution made by mixing PH3, nickel sulfate, and nickel chloride at the current density 0.1A/cm<2> placing a nickel as the opposite pole for about 2 minutes to plate the surface of the cadmium active substance with a microporous membrane of nickel. |
