Silver halide emulsions contain (i) a sensitizing dye of formula (I):- in which Z 1 completes a quinoline nucleus, Z 2 completes a 5- or 6- membered hetercyclic ring, R 1 and R 2 are each optionally substituted alkyl, R 3 is H or together with R 2 completes an alkylene ring, X is an anion, and p and m are each 1 or 2, and (ii) an antifoggant/stabilizer of formula (II):- in which D is divalent aromatic, R 4 and R 6 are each H, OH, halogen, alkoxy, aryloxy or arylthio, R 5 and R 7 are each aryloxy or arylthio and W is CH or N. Preferably the emulsion contains, per mole of silver halide, 0À002-0À2g of (i) and 0À02-10g of (ii) in a ratio of between 1:2 and 1:200. |
