A paint hose extension (12) to facilitate safe application of metallic paints with a hand held electrostatic spray gun (10). The hose extension (12) extends between the spray gun (10) and a hose (11) connected to a grounded paint supply. The hose extension (12) provides a predetermined long electrically insulated paint flow path between a high voltage paint charging electrode (17) in the spray gun (10) and the paint supply hose (11). An electrically conductive layer (31) shields the hose extension (12) between an electrically grounded handle (14) on the spray gun and a remote metallic connector (28) which attaches to the paint supply hose (11). The connector (28) electrically connects the conductive layer (31) with the grounded paint column at the connector.
