A pipe coupling for holding the ends of two, e.g. glass, pipes in opposed relation when one or both of the pipes 12, 14 has a smooth cylindrical end section, comprises a resilient gasket 42 surrounding the pipes and having an inwardly projecting rib 44, a clamping band 10 surrounding the gasket and applying pressure through the gasket to maintain the pipes in sealing relationship with the rib, a bead-like member 20 which surrounds and contacts a smooth ended pipe, and a retaining band 26 having a cylindrical portion surrounding and bonded to that pipe, and a locking portion that interlocks with the member 20 to retain the member around the pipe. The band 26 may have internally secured thereto a composite adhesive medium. 28 consisting of five discrete layers, and, after the band has been applied to the unbeaded pipe 14, heat is applied by a heating coil to the interior of the pipe to heat the assembly whereby the radial thickness of the medium 28 is increased to form a tight fit therebetween and the band and pipe. Prior to bonding, the band may be retained on the pipe by pinching ear portions in the band to draw the band tightly around the pipe; rib 44 may be covered by a liner 46 of polytetrafluoro-ethylene and the member 20 may be made of this material. |
