PURPOSE:To obtain superior specific strength, specific rigidity, heat and oxidation resistances by forming a coating layer consisting of SiC and TiC, ZrC or HfC and having a continuously varying compsn. on the surface of a base material such as a carbon fiber-carbon composite material. CONSTITUTION:A carbon fiber-carbon composite material or a carbon fiber- ceramic composite material contg. carbon fibers as a reinforcing material in carbon or ceramics is used as a base material. A coating layer contg. SiC at the exposed surface part and TiC, ZrC or HfC having a higher coefft. of thermal expansion than SiC and superior adhesion to the base material at the lower part brought into contact with the base material and having a compsn. varying continuously from TiC, ZrC or HfC to SiC between the lower and surface parts is formed on the surface of the base material in 0.05-5mm thickness by chemical vapor deposition or other method to produce a coated structural material. |
