PURPOSE:To easily decompose flons into substances which do not destroy the ozone layer by using a catalyst comprised of an activated carbon carrying an iron oxide in contact decomposition of flons, that is chlorofluoroalkanes, in the presence of steam at >=300 deg.C. CONSTITUTION:Chlorofluoroalkanes, generally called as flons, are brought into contact with a catalyst comprised of an activated carbon carrying an iron oxide in the presence of steam at 300 deg.C to decompose and convert the flons into harmless compounds. The catalyst is prepared by, for example, adding ammonia or an aqueous alkali solution to an iron compound such as a ferric nitrate, ferric chloride, etc., adsorbing activated carbon in the resulting ferric hydroxide precipitate obtained by the previous process, and drying and oxidizing the activated carbon in air. By this method, decomposition of flons can be carried out using a simple reaction vessel with no need of high temperature. When flon waste gases and flon gases of used air conditioners and refrigerators are discharged to air through the apparatus, discharge of flons to air is prevented. |
