The compacting and shearing of the end of a braid are carried out on one and the same machine including two units 12, 18, each one provided with cutters 22-28 arranged in jaws for clamping the braid in order to compact the end into a calibrated unit capable of being solded to a stationary support. With the jaws held closed, one of the units 18 slides to make a shearing of the braid which is held by the clamped jaws. <IMAGE>
