PURPOSE:To obtain a high-brightness image by separating a light beam to a P polarized light beam and an S polarized light beam by a light separating body, converting either polarized light beam into the polarized light beam same as the other by a converting element and synthesizing them to one luminous flux which is made incident on a liquid crystal display panel. CONSTITUTION:The light beam from a light source 5 is separated to the P polarized light beam Ap and the S polarized light beam As by the light separating body 8 and either polarized light beam is converted into the polarized light beam same as the other by the light converting element 9. Then, the directions of two luminous fluxes are made parallel with each other and the luminous fluxes are synthesized to one luminous flux by a luminous flux synthesizing body 13 so as to be projected toward the liquid crystal display panel 1. The luminous flux synthesizing body 13 is a high-transmittivity transparent substance such as glass for prism and has an exiting side staircase-like surface 15 and a back side staricase- like surface 16. The luminous flux of the 1st P polarized light beam Ap is made incident on the exiting side staircase-like surface 15 and reflected to an exiting side. The luminous flux of the 2nd P polarized light Ap' is made incident from an incident surface 14, reflected by the back side staircase-like surface 16 and synthesized with the 1st P polarized light beam Ap to become one luminous flux, which is made incident on the liquid crystal display panel 1. Thus, the high-brightness image approximate to illuminating light from the light source is obtained. |
