Composition contains the vascular anticoagulant annexine and/or its natural or synthetic derivatives or analogues, and Ca++, Cd++, Zn++, Mn++, and/or Co++, and optionally adjuvants, carriers and/or stabilisers. The anticoagulant may be produced by gene technology. A 320-amino acid residue and a 327-amino acid residue peptide are specifically claimed. Preferably the composition contains 0.1-100 mM Ca++ and/or 0.1-100 uM Zn++. The product may be freeze dried. It is given topically or by injection. The dose is 0.005-0.1 mg/kg body weight by injection, so a single dose contains 0.4-7.5 mg of anticoagulant. For topical application, the aqueous solution contains 0.1-1.5 mg/10 ml. USE/ADVANTAGE - The product is claimed for the prophylaxis and treatment of thrombosis. The divalent salts are necessary for the binding of certain anticoagulants (e.g. annexine) to phospholipids such as the phosphatidyl serines, allowing membrane-associated effects to occur and inhibiting coagulation.
