An associative thickener in powder form based on polymethacrylate and having a molecular weight Mw of from 50,000 to 300,000 is built up by copolymerisation of methyl methacrylate, acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid and a long-chain acrylic acid ester and/or methacrylic acid ester which acts as an associative group when incorporated into the copolymer and is obtained from its predominantly aqueous solution or dispersion by spray drying.
