A water meter contains a beaker housing (10) through which water flows, a cover (20), a recess engaged by a cover securing device and a measurement mechanism mounted on the beaker. The cover securing element (38) is a shear-off element which allows the cover to lift up when a defined force is exerted on it by the cover. The strength of the shear-off element corresp. to press, forces in the beaker likely to cause damage. ADVANTAGE - When excessive forces arise in beaker, cheaply replaceable parts are damaged but not costly ones.
