Medical use of polyethylene glycol compsns. - for eliminating harmful substances from the body

(A) Solid or liq. oral dosage forms, e.g. tablets, pills, capsules, powders, syrups or solns., contg. polyethylene glycol (PEG) with a molecular wt. of up to 35,000 are used to dissolve and enhance the excretion of harmful substances diffusing into the intestinal tract. (B) Lotions, creams, pastes, ointments, emulsions, shampoos or solns. contg. PEG are used topically to dissolve harmful substances which originate from the subcutaneous fatty tissue and are not absorbed through the skin, so that the dissolved substances can easily be removed by washing. USE/ADVANTAGE - PEG is a good solvent for halogenated hydrocarbons and is thus effective in scavenging toxins such as DDT, polychlorinated biphenyls, tetrachlorodibenzodioxin and dibenzofurans from contaminated humans or animals.
