The cylindrical wall (3) enclosing the explosive elements (1) of a detonator forms the side-wall of an elongated cup (2) whose transverse cover (4) at one end is thinner than the main cup wall. The combined cup structure is formed of plastic with min. permeability to water vapour and high resistance to attack by water vapour. Alternatively, the cover may be a separate component injection moulded on an open-ended sleeve made e.g. of corrosion-resistant steel. For a caseless component, the explosive elements are held in an internal bore, with the plastic cover affixed by adhesive, entered into a chamfered gap round the cover perimeter. Suitable plastics include polyphenyleneoxide or liq. crystal polymers. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for thin detonator cover foils, denying access of damaging moisture to explosive charge.
