PURPOSE:To heighten the performance of an engine, by securing a heat-resisting soft spacer having a rugged surface, on the bottom of a cylinder head to eliminate the clearance between the bottom of the cylinder head and the top of the piston. CONSTITUTION:Particularly in a Diesel engine, a heat-resisting soft spacer 12 having small wavelike protrusions and recesses is secured on the bottom of the cylinder head 5. After the assembly of the engine, the piston 3 is moved upward to the top dead center and the spacer 12 is compressed between the bottom of the cylinder heat 5 and the top of the piston 3. As a result, the clearance between the top 3a of the piston and the bottom 5a of the cylinder head is easily eliminated independently of all the dimensional tolerances for the machining and assembly of the engine, its thermal expansion during its operation, etc. For that reason, the effective capacity of the combustion chamber 3a can be increased to improve the performance of the engine. |
