Handrail for escalators, etc. - with fluoro:plastic pref. PTFE film or web to minimise friction and rubber layer to optimise traction

The novel features in a handrail (for escalators etc. ) of the type having a rubber of plastics grip with embedded high-strength, low extension reinforcement and a sliding layer with a cross-web of natural or synthetic fibres are that (i) the sliding layer side region (5) contacting the forwarding appts. (6) has a layer (13) of a fluoroplastic (esp. PTFE); and (ii) the sliding layer middle region (7) contacting the driving appts. has a layer (12, 15) of rubber or a bonding mixt. In the claimed prodn. method the sliding layer (4) and cross-web (11) are covered over the whole breadth, prior to vulcanisation, with a rubber or bonding mixt. soln. and the side regions (5) are covered with an etched and primer-or rubber-coated fluoroplastic film; on vulcanisation the fluoroplastic film is firmly bonded to web (22). ADVANTAGE - Friction between sliding layer (4) and forwarding unit (6) is minimised and at the same time an optimum traction between the sliding layer (4) and the drive unit is achieved.
