The device is intended for stopping a single-phase asynchronous motor (1) including a phase-shifting capacitor (C1), when the load on the motor reaches a specified value. The stopping device includes a circuit (2) delivering a d.c. voltage, homothetic to the voltage across the terminals of the phase-shifting capacitor (C1), a circuit (4) delivering at least one constant reference voltage, and a comparator circuit (3) comparing these two voltages and delivering a stop signal when the homothetic d.c. voltage becomes equal to or less than the reference voltage.
