A holder for holding a magnetic sensitive element to secure it at a predetermined position enabling the area of occupation to be decreased and favorable output characterstics to be obtained. The holder is dapated to arranging the magnetic sensitive element opposed to the magnetic drum in a magnetic encoder. The holder for magnetic sensitive element consists of a moving holder (3) for holding a magnetic sensitive element (4) connected with a flexible signal input/output member (5), a fixed holder (2) fixed to the substrate (1) to hold the moving holder (3), and guide means (2b) and (3b) for guiding the moving holder in one direction between the fixed holder and the moving holder, and whereby the moving holder (3) is allowed to move in a direction at right angles with the magnetic sensitive surface of the magnetic sensitive element (4).
