When a body of fluid in a container is stirred by a rotary mixer, whether axial or not, and given that the tangential sections of internal flow have minimum mixing effect, and that, esp. at high speeds an eddy is formed whose various negative aspects include unwantedm absorption of air/gas into the eddy surface, eddy formation is countered by one or more additional stirrers rotating in opposite directions. The stirrers may be of counter-rotating propellor type, with separate drive means via an inner shaft within a hollow outer shaft, or with a single drive with part of its power converted for reversed drive of the second stirrer. Stirrers pref. operate at different levels. Apart from the rotary stirrer(s), the container has no inserts which could affect fluid flow. USE - Esp. for wide range of prodn. processes.
