Fibrous non-woven sheet materials are coloured by applying pigment particles in a carrier medium to a web of fibres at least a portion of the fibres being of synthetic polymeric material and comprising components of which one is a binder having a lower softening point than the other component(s) and subjecting the web to a heat treatment to soften the binder whereby on cooling the web the fibres thereof are bonded together and the pigment particles are attached to the binder. The fibres may be sheath/core component fibres or side-by-side component fibres, the web being optionally needle-punched to produce a portion of the fibres in planes normal to the surfaces of the web. In a modification the web may be first heated to bond it together followed by pigment application and further heating to soften the binder and fire the pigment.
