1,205,944. p-Phenylphenol. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 21 Sept., 1967 [22 Sept., 1966], No. 43052/67. Heading C2C. p-Phenylphenol is prepared by heating p. cyclohexenylphenol in the liquid phase in the presence of a stoichiometric excess of a hydrogen acceptor and a palladium, nickel or platinum catalyst at 100-200‹ C. Preferably the cyclohexenylphenol used as starting material is prepared by condensing 2 moles of phenol with one mole of cyclohexanone in the presence of a strong acid at 40-120‹ C. and cleaving the 1,1 - bis - (p - hydroxyphenol) cyclohexane so formed in the presence of a cleavage catalyst at 140-300‹ C. The preferred hydrogen acceptors are α-methylstyrene and p-nitro phenol. The cleavage catalysts may be, for example, p-toluene sulphonic acid, acidic fuller's earth, potassium bisulphate or an acidic metal chloride. |
