NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (R<1>-R<3> are each lower alkyl; R<4> is H or OH; thick line is double bond when R<4> is H, whereas single bond in case R<4> is OH) and its salt. EXAMPLE:2,3-dihydro-2-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)-6-methoxy-5-benzofuranol. USE:Therapeutic agents for diseases stemming from reactive oxygen and organic radicals, e.g. ischemic heart diseases such as arrhythmia. coronary convulsion, cardiac tissue necrosis and cardiac infarction, ischemic cerebral diseases such as cerebral infarction, dementia and senile dementia, hepatopathy, pancreatopathy, nephropathy, etc. PREPARATION:A compound of formula II (R<5> and R<6> are each protected OH) is reacted with a base to form a compound of formula Ia, which is then dehydrated to obtain a compound of formula Ib. Alternatively, FR-901242 substance- productive strain classified as mold Paecilomyces is put to culture in a nutritive medium followed by recovering FR-901242 substance from the culture process to obtain the objective compound of the formula I. |
