Detergent compositions contain a detergent ingredient and a water-insol. solid cation-exchange material. Cation-exchange material may be phosphorylated cellulose e.g. a phosphorylated cellulose fabric, which can be incorporated in the composition as a comminuted material or as a cloth contained in the package. The compositions are useful for home laundering applications, the cation-exchange material present acting to solve the problems encountered in using hard water. The amount of conventional inorganic builder normally present in detergent compositions can be reduced or eliminated.
