Medical treatment apparatus for sustaining the vitality of an organ in the gastrointestinal tract by catheterisation including improvements in catheter placement, ischemia detection, and oxygenation. A disclosed embodiment of the catheter has magnetically responsive structure at its top and a device for aid in placement of the catheter has an electromagnet cooperative with the magnetic tip.
