Collapsible steering wheel - in which controlled symmetrical collapse is achieved by central foamed impact absorber and bridging pieces with areas of reduced section

A steering wheel for motor vehicles has a rim (3) and spokes (2,2a,2b) surrounded by a foamed plastic material (4) which simultaneously forms an impact absorbing body (5) in the central dished area of the wheel. The impact absorber(s) has radial bridging pieces (11,12,13) which produce a controlled collapsing of the rim during a collision. The collapsing is controlled by the aid of special areas of reduced cross-section (8,9). USE/ADVANTAGE - In motor vehicles as a safety feature. During a collision the steering wheel undergoes a retarded, symmetrical collapse and has no sharp edges.
