The hopper car (2) has upwardly pivoting side flaps (3) to discharge bulk goods onto further conveying means (13) beside the track (1). Measured control of the flap is achieved using a hydraulic cylinder unit (6) pivoted to the car (8) and to the flap (9). Additional concertina type side walls (16) help control the discharge. ADVANTAGE - The flap control allows regulation of the hopper car emptying rate to suit the capacity of the subsequent conveyor.
