A roller shutter is designed to fit in an opening in a wall (11). The shutter is wound onto a shaft (41) which is installed in a rectangular housing which is mounted immediately below the soffit of the opening in the wall. The roller shutter housing has an end plate (212) which is attached to the masonry by means of a mounting plate (211). The housing end plate' (212) supports the end bearings of the roller shutter shaft and it also supports three intermeshing gears (421) (422) (423). The gear wheel (423) is mounted on the shaft (424) of the actuating mechanism (426) which is driven by vertical shaft. This arrangement of the drive does not reduce the usable width of the doorway.
