A monolithic ceramic element for use as a soot filter or as a catalytic purifier for the exhaust system of i.c. engines is subdivided into several segments (10) in series. Each segment is split in five sections (4), sepd. by expansion gaps (5). A spidery element (14) separates each segment from the next. The gaps (5) are filled by a binder which vaporises at the working temp. Empty channels (2) in the sections (4) alternate with channels closed by a stopper (3). ADVANTAGE - This compensates for thermal expansion and prevents cracks in the filter elements.
