Repairing damage in rubber articles - by hot pressing cleaned affected area between natural rubber repair patch

Articles of rubber such as conveyor belts, tyres etc. are repaired by placing a repair patch on the affected part, heating, and pressing it down. The patch has also a bonding film of sulphur-free or accelerated natural rubber or, alternatively, an adhesive film. Such a film is pref. polychloro-prene, neoprene or similar contg. a hardener. A damaged area on a rubber tyre is first roughened to remove dust and dirt, and a (e.g.) natural rubber patch is laid on, assuming the tyre is cold cured or is a hot cured conveyor belt instead. If it is a belt requiring cold bonding then an adhesive film is used. Suitable plates are placed above and beneath the area which is hot pressed together with the top repair patch. During the hot pressing stage sulphur in the article and repair path reacts with the intermediate layer which itself is sulphur-free. If the bonding patch is free from any accelerator its own sulphur reacts with accelerator in the article and repair path. ADVANTAGE - The process is free from environmentally or hygienically undesirable effects and it saves time.
