Mechanical coupling of esp. aluminium alloy sections - using interlocking tongue and groove joints with residual grooves into which is press fitted auxiliary tongues held e.g. by glued grooves

Means for connecting two workpieces (1,2), esp. continuously cast aluminium or aluminium alloy sections (e.g. AlMg4.5 Mn W28) with interlocking tongue and grooved profiles, has the novelty that the cross-section of the tongue (3) is narrower than that of the groove (4) so that a V-shaped residual groove (5) remains after the sections are interlocked. In this residual groove an auxiliary tongue piece (10) is fitted having a cross-section which forms a press-fit with the residual groove. At least one face of this auxiliary tongue has barb-like serrations running along its length which can engage with matching serrations on the face of the groove into which it is fitted. ADVANTAGE - Average size aluminium sections can be coupled without the use of large hydraulic presses to form larger sections.
