Using waste from sugar beet - by processing to desulphurise chimney gas giving prod. suitable as improver for acidified soil

Utilisation of wastes from sugar prodn. from beet comprises contacting the waste, under spray conditions, with chimney gas of a combustion plant, then using the prod. for soil improvement of growth media. Treatment with the chimney gas is carried out under conditions which (1) do not destroy the humus characteristics of the waste and (2) do not cause significiant oxidn. (sic) of lime to gypsum, and the 'over-alkalinity' is not reduced to an extent which makes the material unsuitable as neutralising agent for acid soils. USE/ADVANTAGE - The treatment removes SO2 (and other acidic pollutants) from the gas and simultaneously lowers the pH of the waste material, making it suitable for neutralising lightly over-acidified soils. The temp. of the gas is not significantly reduced (contrast conventional wet washing procedures), eliminating the need for reheating.
