<p>A controller (15, 17) for a computer LCD display in a low power computer refreshes the display (not shown) directly from a bit map memory (202). One of the two memory (201) stores character codes and attributes, and the other (202) stores the bit maps which are represented as pixels in the display. Whenever characters are sent to the caracter code memory (201) by the microprocessor (16), they are translated by the circuitry of the controller (30.000) to bit maps in the bit map memory (202). Refreshing the display directly from a bit map memory (202) requires fewer read operations than refreshing by reading a character code, attributes and a font table. Reducing the number of read operations per byte refreshed reduces power consumed by refreshing the screen from the bit map memory, the microprocessor (16) must be turned on to update the character code memory (201), whereas the microprocessor (16) may be turned off when the display is not being updated for saving power.</p> |
