An arrangement for highly accurate measurement of great lengths using a laser interferometer contains a freely positioned linear guide (5) with a carriage (6) for holding on supports a measurement sensor (8) connected to a reflector (7). The laser interferometer (9) is set up w.r.t. the reflector. The measurment sensor can be moved along the carriage. A further carriage (6a) on the linear guide carries an optical system (12) which focusses the measurement beam (11). USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for simple, accurate measurement of dia. or distance of unstable structures, e.g. of shaped torsionally weak rings during construction of rockets and aircraft.
