The mirrors of a laser tube are adjusted by securing at least one end 16 of the laser tube 10 to a fixed support 21, and applying a force to the laser tube at a location spaced from its secured end by a distance of at least one-half the tube length. Two (or four) orthogonal screws 51 are used to apply the force. The tube may be secured at both ends with screws acting at its centre. The laser tube is thus gradually bent from the secured end(s) such as to effect the adjustment of the mirrors with respect to the laser tube axis. The described laser tube is enclosed in a metal cylindrical sleeve which distributes heat uniformly around the tube to minimize thermal bending during the operation of the tube. In addition, the described tube includes two cathodes at its opposite ends, and two anodes at intermediate portions thereof, both of the cathodes being grounded and being cooled by a common cooling medium. <IMAGE> |
