An aqs. soln. of a resole is prepared by preparing an aqs. mixture of an aldehyde and a phenol in molar ratio 1.5 to 5.0:1 adding an alkaline earth metal cpd. and reacting to form the resole soln.The reaction is carried out in the absence of urea. Sulphonic acid is added to the resole sol. to give a pH of 1 to 8.
