A haloalkyl alkanoate (III) is useful as a reagent for preparing some oral antibacterials. The compound is now found to be preparable economically and safely by treating alkanoic acid salt (I) with 10 equivalents or more of dihaloalkane (II) in 2 to 5 parts by weight of alkanoic acid dialkylamide. <CHEM> (wherein R and R<1> each is hydrogen or optionally substituted alkyl, M is a salt forming atom or group, and X and Hal each is halogen)
