PURPOSE:To allow the taking of a large switching rate without changing the thickness of a liquid crystal layer by forming photoconductive layers as island- shaped groups and packing a light shielding material having the dielectric constant lower than the dielectric constant of the photoconductive layers between the islands of the photoconductive layers. CONSTITUTION:Transparent electrodes 17A on a writing side and the photoconductive layer 14a are formed to the island-shaped groups of the same area by patterning and light reflecting layers 15A are also formed by patterning. The light shielding material 21 having the low dielectric constant is packed between the islands of the photoconductive layers 14A. Metals are used as the light reflecting layers 15A and the area thereof is set larger than the area of the photoconductive layers 14A. The operating area of the photoconductive layers 14A is effectively decreased by constituting the photoconductive layers 14A of the island-shaped groups in such a manner and, therefore, the larger switching ratio can be taken by reducing the film thickness of the photoconductive layers 14A. |
