1,1,1-trifluoroalkanes are converted into 1,1-difluoroalkenes in high conversion by passing, for example, 1,1,1-trifluoroethane through a catalyst bed containing an inorganic chromium oxyfluoride at a reaction temperature of above about 430 DEG C. The catalyst bed is periodically regenerated with hot oxygen when the conversion rate falls.
