The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 3,4-dialkoxypyridines of general formula I <IMAGE> and their salts, which comprises reacting hydroxypyridines (pyridones) of general formula II <IMAGE> with suitable alkylating agents, if necessary subsequently removing any R5 protection groups present, and if desired subsequently converting the free compounds of general formula I into their salts, or the salts obtained into the free compounds of general formula I.
