The invention relates to a process for removing halogenated organic compounds from waste water. The waste water is contacted with sewage sludge to which lipophilic substances, for example fats or oils have been added. The addition of the lipophilic substances provides an adsorbent having very good adsorption properties with respect to the halogenated organic compounds. The sewage sludge loaded with the halogenated organic compounds is ultimately separated from the purified waste water and incinerated or dumped. (Figure)
