The movement of a moving coil meter which is intended to operate with a non linear relation between the input signal to be measured and the output deflection, so as to use as much of the possible angle of deflection as possible, is provided with a damping coil at an angle to the signal coil adjusted to give uniform damping over the full deflection angle. The moving coil 38 is wound round supports 40, 42 which are held in suspension by taut filaments 16. A bridge piece 50 with arcuate edges 52 is fixed across the inside of the coil 38. A single turn damping coil 46 is mounted on this bridge piece may be rotated about a pivot 54 engaging the support 40. The bottom part of the coil has a re-entrant part 48 of highly resistive wire which may be partly removed to alter the coil resistance. The two coils 38, 46 are arranged in the rest position so that when the movement is energized the absolute values of the acute rest angles which they make with the magnetic field change in opposite directions. To adjust the system, a standard square wave is applied to the movement and the angle of the damping coil adjusted to just below minimum damping. Final adjustment is achieved by removing some of the coil resistance 48. |
