A tackifying cement comprises a pentaerythritol ester of a hydrogenated rosin, a sulphur vulcanizable terpolymer rubber based on two different alpha olefins and a copolymerizable polyene, and an organic solvent for the ester and rubber. The terpolymer is preferably based on ethylene, propylene and dicyclopentadiene. The cement may contain a resin which is a reaction product of (1) a phenol or alkyl-substituted phenol having at least one ortho or para position unsubstituted, (2) a terpene, or (3) a mono or polycyolic hydrocarbon having at least two non-conjugated double bonds, reactants (2) and (3) being different. The cement may further contain a thermoplastic para-alkylated phenol-formaldehyde resin in which the alkyl group has from 4 to 8 carbon atoms, and the resin has a ball and ring softening point in the range from 70‹ to 110‹ C. The terpolymer rubber which may be fully compounded for sulphur vulcanization, may also be compounded with an extender oil, and carbon black. In the examples, a cement is formed by dissolving in cyclohexane a pentaerythritol ester of a hydrogenated rosin and a tyre tread stock compounded from an ethylene-propylene-dicyclopentadiene (or ethylidene norbornene or methylene norbornene) terpolymer incorporating an extender oil and carbon black. In further examples this cement contains a resin formed by reacting phenol in xylene and in the presence of a Friedel Crafts catalyst (i.e. BF 3 ) with dicyclopentadiene and either α-limonene or a mixture of α- and #-pinene. In a further example, a high boiling point solvent such as tetralin or acetophenone may be incorporated, and further, a p-octyl phenol formaldehyde novolac resin may be incorporated. |
