Pollution of water by oils and hydrocarbons, esp in ports and on rivers, is combatted by placing flexible, open-celled foam resin bodies previously treated with a lipophilising agent e.g. fatty acid fatty amine, etc. on the surface of the polluted water. The foam bodies are pref. of polyurethane. The process is simple and efficient and the foam bodies preferentially absorb mineral oils, vegetable oils, hydrocarbons even when impregnated with water. The foam absorbents are easily recovered.
|
