Concasting mould consists of a casting unit (2) and a cooling unit (4,5) made of moveable plates (8,9) which surround the casting. The plates can move elastically both perpendicular and parallel to the casting direction under the action of elastic elements (22,25) attached to neighbouring plates at their joints (19). Pref. the plates (8) in the first cooling zone are connected without a gap to the casting unit (2) to produce a flexible zone (33). The elastic elements are made of a profile rubber part (25) which holds together the holding arms (26,27) of the adjacent plates (8',9'). The part (25) surrounds the plates which in turn encircle the casting with small gaps (40) between the plates in the horizontal plane. Movement of the plates vertically is limited by butting edges (31) inside the elastic elements. The casting unit has a closed cooling circuit while the cooling unit has an open spray device (41). ADVANTAGE - High cooling and casting rate is achieved under acceptible wear. The break-out rate is reduced and due to the higher cooling rate a fine crystalline structure is obtained. The surface finish has reduced casting faults and the casting geometry is improved, esp. sharp corners are avoided.
