A position sensor comprises a sensor coil (18), a core element of high magnetic permeability material for displacing into the coil, means (OSC) for supplying an alternating current to the coil such that the voltage across the coil varies linearly with the position of the core element, and means (D1,R1,C1) responsive to the voltage across the coil to produce a d.c. output signal representing that voltage, this means acting without reference to the input a.c. signal.
