An evacuation system for removing fluids and debris from the oral or other body cavity of a patient via an aspirator which aspirator is operably connected to a specialized pump assembly (10). The assembly includes a series of spaced apart circular plates or rotor disks (44) in parallel relationship which revolve at substantial speeds in a housing to create a vacuum and air movement by the boundary layer principle to carry the fluids and debris to a disposal source. A number of such rotating disks are combined to form a rotor unit (24) and the rotor unit conveys the fluids and debris to an adjacent diffuser unit (26). The diffuser unit is static and does not rotate and which may use a set of stationary vanes (62). The rotor unit and diffuser unit together form a stage and the assembly may include more than one stage. Spacing of the rotor disks is important not only for providing appropriate vacuum and air movement but for handling of particular debris. A dental handpiece is also disclosed employing a boundary layer drag rotor (116). Pressurized air is conveyed to the rotor unit and is thereafter exhausted by vacuum means.
