NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formulaI[n is 9 or 10; X is alkylene chain having an oxy bond or pendant OH group; Y is OH or NR2 (R is H or hydroxyethyl or two Rs together with the nitrogen atom forming an N'-hydroxyethyl substituted piperazine ring or phthalimide ring)]and an acid addition salt thereof. EXAMPLE:Diethylene glycol monodecaprenyl ether. USE:A viral infection inhibitor for vertebrate animals having antiviral and antitumor actions. PROCESS:An isoprenyl alcohol of formula II is converted into a halide or arylsulfonic acid in a solvent, e.g. THF, at room temperature -100 deg.C, and reacted with a compound of the formula MO-X-Y (M is alkali metallic atom) to give the compound of formulaI. A compound of formula III is reacted in the same way as described above to afford a compound of formula IV, which is then reacted with a compound of the formula NHR2 to give the compound of formulaIin which X is an alkylene group having pendant OH group.
