PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound in high yield with simple treatment after nuclear hydroxylation of a phenol with a ketone peroxide or a combination of a ketone and hydrogen peroxide using sulfamic acid or its derivative as catalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective dihydric phenol (e.g. catechol, hydroquinone) can be obtained by reaction, in the presence of a catalyst, sulfamic acid or its derivative [esp. a compound of the formula (R1 and R2 are each H, 1-6C alkyl or aryl), e.g. H2NRO3], of a phenol with a ketone peroxide or a combination of a ketone and hydrogen peroxide. With the present process, high yield can be accomplished, additional treatments such as neutralization are not required, and also e.g. its isolation after reaction can easily be made. Furthermore, the present process is simple; therefore, dihydric phenols useful as raw materials for medicines, pesticides, perfumes, etc., can be easily produced in high purity at low cost. |
